Resume Buzz Words

What Language Style To Use When Writing Your Resume

There is no doubt that a certain writing style is beneficial when composing your resume and buzz words can help. But this style should also be infused with your own personality. So often resumes are wooden in that they seem as if they have been written by automatons for automatons and they have no life or vibrancy.

If you think about it, every day is an adventure. You never know what is going to happen, even if you think you do. As you set off for work, or college, or sport, or whatever, you have no idea how the day will end. You have little guarantee that you will not be called upon to do something extraordinary, or even life changing. When you look back over your life to date, an exercise you should certainly go through if you are writing a resume.

My point is this - resume buzz words are fine, but don't let them steal your personality.

OK, having said all that, what are the words that you need to bring in to your resume?

The accepted view is that you should use strong verbs rather than weak verbs. So for example, you always "manage" something but you never "monitor" it!

The important place for the buzz words is where in your resume you are describing your responsibilities and achievements. Here is a list of words you should try to incorporate if possible. There is no need to use them all.

Managed
Directed
Controlled
Implemented
Led
Devised
Actioned
Responsible for

I am sure you can think of others, but you will see how each of these words creates an impression of strength and action.

On the other hands these words seem weak and reactive rather than proactive:-

Over saw
Watched over
Monitored

I am sure you see the difference. So when you are creating your resume, be careful to consider the impression the words you use will have on the reader.
